Working here - life at HMGCC

As a hub of freethinking, and innovation, HMGCC is an exciting, creative place to work for both beginners and experts. It’s a place where ideas, advice and knowledge is shared, and where you’ll discover opportunities to broaden your mind every day.

We’re always seeking to unlock potential, whether that’s in our technology or our people. It’s why we offer a wide range of events, activities, sports and social clubs throughout the year, meaning you can meet and engage with people across the whole organisation.

“The social scene here is great. There are so many events and
chances to get together.”

Activities

To promote our culture of learning and development across the site, foster our culture of technical innovation and deliver the most cutting edge technologies to our partners, we’re proud to have technologists. These include engineers with a specific brief to be both technical and thought leaders across the following areas:

  • Digital analytics
  • Mobile
  • Platforms
  • Wireless internet
  • Internet and networking
  • Mechanical
  • Materials
  • Space and satellite
  • Acoustics
  • Telecoms
  • Data

They’re the go-to experts in their field, happy to impart their wisdom to any colleagues in need of information, knowledge or advice about their area.

You’ll also enjoy regular lunchtime talks. These interesting and informative talks keep everyone up to speed with innovation projects and success stories from around the site, as well as relevant and interesting external guest speakers.

Our family days are a great way to show your nearest and dearest where you work and what you do. Much more than simply a site visit, they can enjoy technology talks, treasure hunts and even try their hand at some challenges thought up by our engineers!

There are many ways to find like-minded people here at HMGCC. In fact, we have a range of active, unique societies that cater for different hobbies and interests. Some of our current groups include:

  • Astronomy and Photography – a group who organise talks on all things astronomical, and whose artwork decorates our corridors.
  • OUT@HMGCC – for anyone who has an interest in equality and inclusion, and wants to identify as part of, or be a supporter of, the LGBTQ community.
  • Hackspace – for advice on everything from Raspberry Pi to Arduino, and as a space to complete personal projects – even re-working retro toys!
  • Christian Fellowship – an informal society for colleagues across the site and across all denominations.

We present corporate awards to recognise those people who have gone above and beyond. We have a broad range of categories, such as:

  • Technical and Engineering Excellence - awarded to our nationally recognised technical experts, this award also carries research and training time to support our foremost technical leaders
  • Innovation – awarded to those who’ve performed an innovation that has taken the organisation forward
  • Chief Executive Award - awarded to individuals or teams whose work has made a real difference to HMGCC and our partners, perhaps through collaborative efforts or by making personal sacrifices for the good of the organisation

There are loads of fun social events to enjoy throughout the year, including:

  • The Sports and Social Club organises events and have discounted trips for members. Previous activities include clay pigeon shooting, a chocolate evening, theatre outings, concerts, Harry Potter Studios, Wicksteed Park, and even Santa Pod FIA Euro Finals!
  • Creativity@Leisure competitions that celebrate our staff’s creativity outside of work.
  • Retired colleagues events, where there’s a chance to catch up and share stories.
  • Easter egg hunt.
  • Pumpkin competition.
  • Bike to work week.
  • Tug of war.

We’re always looking for the future champions of cyber security. The Cyber Security Challenge UK, a series of national competitions and initiatives designed to identify, inspire and enable people to become cyber security professionals.

Cyber security contains a diverse collection of disciplines across a broad spectrum of skills. You don’t necessarily need to be technical to be part of the industry; common sense, logic and the ability to identify and understand risk are all valuable assets. Above all, you’ll possess the ability to “think the unthinkable” and generally pursue the end goal at all costs!

Why not give some of our past challenges a go?

Challenges

We host an annual technology fair. All our staff are invited to attend, along with other government departments. It’s an excellent opportunity to see the latest tech that’s available, and a great chance to network with exhibitors and other departments.

A chance to see who the best of the best are across all government departments – not just HMGCC. Beginner coders can also get involved, as it provides great mentoring opportunities.
