Inspiring the next generation of women engineers
07/07/2025
An audience of 150 year eight girls attended a special talk by HMGCC engineers to mark International Women in Engineering Day (INWED).
Two female engineers from HMGCC were invited by the organisation Girls in Science to attend Watling Academy in Milton Keynes as part of an event to inspire future generations of engineers. The event was hosted by Girls in Science founder Lakechia Jeanne (pictured above).
The engineers, both of whom were former apprentices, talked through their own personal journeys to their current careers at HMGCC.
They discussed the benefits of apprenticeships, the importance of role models and talked about the importance of women’s voices in what has traditionally been a male-dominated profession.
One of the engineers recalled how she was initially predicted low grades at school, but had been determined to prove these predictions wrong, developing a strong interest in technology which eventually led her to an HMGCC apprenticeship.
She told the pupils: “It doesn’t matter what happened yesterday, all that matters is your mindset and not just giving up. Your career is entirely based on your actions not someone else’s words.”
HMGCC apprenticeship opportunities are open to applications in the autumn. To find out more, see our apprenticeship pages.
