HMGCC inspires future engineers at MK Innovates STEM festival

HMGCC recently participated in the MK Innovates STEM Festival, an event dedicated to  highlighting technologies and career paths in science, technology, engineering and maths.

One aim of the event, which was held at Unity Place in central Milton Keynes, was to engage all those considering futures in STEM, particularly those who are under-represented in these areas, such as women.

HMGCC’s activities during the two-day event included hosting a talk, taking part in a panel and staging a stand, enabling visitors to take part in entertaining STEM activities and find out more about opportunities in national security engineering.

HMGCC speakers delivering an inspirational talk about their career histories and experiences as women in STEM roles included engineer Angela and scientist Sam.

HMGCC was also represented on a panel discussing artificial intelligence and online safety for children. The event saw approximately 1000 children from 22 primary and secondary schools in Milton Keynes visit the festival.

The HMGCC team guided the student visitors through some fun activities, including using a flashing, model STEM car – designed by one of our engineers to teach the fun side of physics and electronics

The HMGCC robot arms were also deployed and delighted students by delivering a chocolate bar to them when they successfully cracked a special code.

Sam, a scientist at HMGCC who gave a speech at the event, said: “It can be hard to find out about the variety of STEM careers available – I know I found this when I was younger, so I enjoy being able to play a small part by being a STEM Ambassador, promoting career options.

“I feel it is important to support HMGCC in showing the next generation the range of careers with a real sense of purpose in the important areas of national security engineering, science and technology.”
