Could AI help bomb disposal experts see more clearly?

HMGCC is inviting innovators to develop a machine learning solution that helps engineers identify and understand electronic components in bomb disposal x-ray images.

When disarming suspected explosive devices, operatives rely on x-ray images to identify the electronic trigger mechanism before attempting to disable it. But complex circuits, unclear imagery, and deliberate countermeasures can make this painstaking and high-risk work even harder.

This 12-week funded challenge invites applicants to build a demonstrator at Technology Readiness Level 5, using machine learning to improve how electronic components are identified and characterised from x-ray images alone.

HMGCC will fund time and materials, overheads, and other indirect costs for successful applicants.
