As an electronics degree apprentice at HMGCC, you’ll undertake placements across our electronics teams that do everything from design and test simple single board computers right the way through to the development of software defined radios. You’ll gain experience of applying your knowledge to real work applications as well as achieving a Bachelor’s (Honours) in Engineering (BEng) in Embedded Electronics Systems Engineering, and within a few years of graduation, you can expect to become an Incorporated (IEng) and/or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Not only that, you’ll be helping to protect national security and will go on to find solutions like nowhere else.

Roles at HMGCC

At HMGCC we are known as national security engineers, but the scope of our work is broad including almost every engineering type as well as disciplines in science, technology and non-technical roles. Read more here about just some of our core areas of work. 

Corporate and support
You don’t have to be a technical specialist to play a vital part in HMGCC’s work. Your expertise in IT, finance, HR, or administration, will be genuinely important to our success.
Hardware engineering
We design and deliver a range of technology. Sometimes we use what’s out there in the market, at other times we make custom and innovative hardware solutions.
Manufacturing
Our manufacturing plant boasts more than 50 disciplines from PCB manufacture and testing to 3D printing, plastics expertise, paint skills, laser cutting, wiring and assembly.
Project and programme management
To deliver engineering breakthroughs, project and programme management are integral. Your knowledge of planning, monitoring and delivery will put you at the heart of the innovation process.
Science
A spectrum of scientific subject specialisms play an important role at HMGCC, not least areas of work such as physics and forensics.
Software engineering
The scope of our work is broad. We produce projects, from concept to solution, creating what is needed for national security.
Systems engineering
Our systems engineers are the champions of best practice, raising the standards by closely collaborating with both government and industry.

Jada - Software developer

I work in a protective monitoring team, monitoring data streams. I look at Jira tickets, talk to customers about bugs found and I work with frontend design/prototyping tools. Most of what I do needs to be secret, so I can’t fully explain how exciting and rewarding my job actually is, but it really is!

Mae - Business relationship manager

I started in project management at HMGCC and now I work on building trust and engagement with industry and academia, supporting initiatives to pull through new technology and ideas to HMGCC. I love meeting and collaborating with people and doing my bit for our mission in a corporate role.

Lara - PCB engineer

I work in a small team but as R&D lead I look after and solve the problems and quirky things that occur. I look into new materials, technology, email scientists from around the world, travel to meet industry experts and play with chemistry when I get back.

Dan - Software engineer

I discovered HMGCC via the CyberFirst summer internship. After university I joined as a software engineer. I've had so many opportunities including overseas training and conferences. One thing that brings me to work every day is hearing about the impact of the work I have directly contributed to.

Rach - Textiles specialist

I work in Textiles, supporting teams around the world. The creative, inclusive environment within my diverse team allows me to tackle challenging and sometimes very strange tasks, building my knowledge of unique processes and techniques. I love my role, you never know what the day will bring!
