I joined HMGCC as a Business Support Administrator. I was 52 at the time of the job offer.
I thought I’d mostly be taking minutes and filing, but straight away I spent a year in Finance doing interesting cashier and expenses work, and even organised two seminars. At the end of the year, I applied to be Service Operations Manager, and received a promotion.
My career here has certainly been more eventful than I ever imagined. I once had the opportunity to do some software testing to help a resource shortage, and ended up with an ISTQB Foundation qualification! I now help the test team whenever they’re busy.
I’ve also taken a plain English course, visited a number of Government departments, and I’m developing my knowledge of Web Content Management systems. I’m even helping to build the department’s new corporate website, and I’ve written the guidance notes for our Content Authors.
With another nine years to go here before I retire – who knows what’s coming next?
